SMA-based Ball-holding Separation Nut with Holding Clamp (SBN-HC series) is developed for the launch lock requirement of the space scanning or pointing mechanism (typically for RF or optical communications). A clamp holding mechanism is incorporated into the standard SBN separation nut, and the clamps are able to open after the actuation of the separation nut, which generates a 4~5mm gap between the moving structure on the scanning or pointing mechanism and the separation nut. A travel switch is also integrated into the separation nut to monitor the opening movement of the clamp, simplifying ground operations and flight mission requirements. The SBN-HC series separation nut is only offered a with bottom mount (BM) interface, with a load capacity of 2~20kN.
Key features of SBN-HC series separation nuts are as follows:
Low shock
Millisecond release
Easily reset without refurbishment
Redundant, resettable SMA triggers
Near simultaneous release of multiple hold-down points
Compact and low mass
Space-qualified parts and materials
Custom configurations available under request Electrical compatibility with pyro-activation circuits
Travel switches are incorporated to monitor both the actuation of separation nut and the opening of clamps

1 Ultimate load is the maximum load that the separation nut can hold and release, which is 1.8 times of nominal release load;
2 Proof load is 1.2 times of nominal release load;
3 Shock emission dependent of Preload level and support structure;
4 Release time is dependent on actuation current and surrounding temperature;
5 Mass includes 4X0.3m AWG 22# lead wire;
6 The gap generated between the moving structure and the separation nut.
