The Compact SMA-based Ball-holding Separation Nut (SBN-S Series) is an improved model of the SBN series separation nut. Its working principle is the same as that of the SBN series. However, the product envelope size and weight are reduced (about 23% in weight and 25% in height) dramatically thanks to the improvement of SMA wires training technology and optimization of product structure. The compact separation nut is very suitable for payload locking in narrow spaces, such as small solar wings, small laser communication terminals, etc.
The separation nuts are offered with two mechanical interfaces: standard top mount (SBN-STD) interface and Bottom Mount (SBN-BM) interface. The separation nut offers both high load capability (1~15KN) and fast actuation time (~50ms).
Key features of SBN series separation nuts are as follows:
Compact, about 25% shorter than SBN series separation nuts
Low shock
Millisecond release
Easily reset without refurbishment
Redundant, resettable SMA triggers
Near simultaneous release of multiple hold-down points
Low mass, about 23% lighter than SBN series separation nuts
Space-qualified parts and materials
Custom configurations available under request
Electrical compatibility with pyro-activation circuits
Redundant switches are incorporated for simple control
1 Ultimate load is the maximum load that the separation nut can hold and release, which is 1.8 times of nominal release load;
2 Proof load is 1.2 times of nominal release load;
3 Shock emission dependent of Preload level and support structure;
4 Release time is dependent on actuation current and surrounding temperature;
5 Resistance can be raised to compatible with higher bus voltages;
6 Mass includes 4X0.3m lead wires (SBN-1KN-STD/BM: AWG 26#, others: AWG 22#).
